A Look at the Overall Numbers

There may be fewer truck accidents than other motor vehicle crashes, but the statistics are still alarming. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation:

  • 333,000 large trucks were involved in accidents in 2012. (Large trucks are defined as those with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 lbs.)
  • As a result of those accidents, 3,921 people were killed. There were 104,000 injuries.
  • 73% of fatality victims were inside other vehicles. 10% were bystanders, pedestrians, and other non-occupants. 18% of those who died were inside the large trucks.
  • Similarly, 73% of injury victims were inside other vehicles. 3% were non-occupants, and 24% were driving or riding in the truck.
  • Trucks accounted for only 9% of the total miles travelled in 2012. They made up 8% of all vehicles involved in fatal accidents.
  • In Florida alone, there were 194 fatal truck accidents in 2012.

Truck Accident Causes

Truck accidents can occur for a number of reasons. Sadly, they are often the result of driver error, though other factors can play a role, as well. Some common causes of truck accidents include:

  • Speeding
  • Inattention
  • Driver fatigue
  • Prescription and/or over-the-counter drugs
  • Poorly kept trucking fleet, leading to vehicle or tire malfunction
  • Drunk driving
  • Badly maintained roads

What to Do If You Were Involved in a Truck Accident

If you or a loved one was involved in a collision with a truck, you may be struggling with severe, life-altering injuries. You may even be mourning the wrongful death of a loved one. If so, you are entitled to justice. We know that a lawsuit will not restore your physical mobility or bring back a loved one. However, it can obtain the funds you need to cover medical bills, lost wages, and other expenses. A lawsuit can also bring justice to negligent parties and give your family a sense of closure.

Attorney Horrox has been representing personal injury victims for over 26 years. He understands the emotional and physical trauma that you may be facing, and he will provide compassionate legal guidance. There may be a number of parties responsible for the incident. Attorney Horrox will find all those responsible for your accident, and he will fight for the compensation you deserve.
