A Look at the Overall Numbers
There may be fewer truck accidents than other motor vehicle crashes, but the statistics are still alarming. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation:
- 333,000 large trucks were involved in accidents in 2012. (Large trucks are defined as those with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 lbs.)
- As a result of those accidents, 3,921 people were killed. There were 104,000 injuries.
- 73% of fatality victims were inside other vehicles. 10% were bystanders, pedestrians, and other non-occupants. 18% of those who died were inside the large trucks.
- Similarly, 73% of injury victims were inside other vehicles. 3% were non-occupants, and 24% were driving or riding in the truck.
- Trucks accounted for only 9% of the total miles travelled in 2012. They made up 8% of all vehicles involved in fatal accidents.
- In Florida alone, there were 194 fatal truck accidents in 2012.
